If you’re looking to rent a private jet in Lagos, you may not have to pay the full price of a traditional private charter. Empty leg flights offer a potential way to enjoy private aviation at a significantly reduced cost, depending on available routes and schedules.
At Handson Logistics, we help travellers explore private aviation opportunities, including available empty leg flights. With access to more than 3,000 empty leg flight opportunities as they become available, we can help you explore options that may suit your travel plans.
But what exactly are empty leg flights, how do they work, and how can you take advantage of them? Let’s take a closer look.
What Are Empty Leg Flights?
An empty leg flight occurs when a private jet needs to travel from one destination to another without the passengers from its previous booking. This usually happens when an aircraft drops off a passenger and must reposition for its next scheduled trip.
For example, imagine a private jet flies a client from Lagos to Abuja. After dropping off the passenger, the aircraft may need to return to Lagos or continue to another city for its next booking.
If that repositioning journey is available for booking, another traveller may be able to use the aircraft rather than have it fly empty.
These opportunities are known as empty leg flights or repositioning flights.
Why Are Empty Leg Flights Cheaper?
Private jet charters can be expensive because clients typically pay for the aircraft and the arrangements required for their specific journey.
With an empty leg flight, however, the aircraft already has a planned repositioning journey. An operator may offer that flight at a reduced rate to help offset the cost of flying the aircraft without passengers.
Depending on the route, operator and availability, empty leg flights can sometimes be up to 80% cheaper than a regular private charter.
This can make private aviation more accessible to travellers who want the convenience, privacy and comfort of a private jet without necessarily paying the full standard charter price.
However, actual savings vary, and not every empty leg flight will offer the same discount.
Can You Rent a Private Jet in Lagos Through an Empty Leg Flight?
Yes, potentially. If you’re searching for a way to rent a private jet in Lagos, empty leg opportunities are worth considering.
Depending on current availability, you may find flights departing from Lagos, arriving in Lagos or connecting Lagos with other destinations.
The key is to remain flexible. Empty leg flights are determined by existing aircraft schedules, so the route you want may not always be available on your preferred date.
Rather than choosing any destination and departure time you want, you look for an available flight that matches your travel plans.
For travellers who can adjust their schedules, this can be an attractive way to explore private jet travel at a lower cost.
What Should You Know Before Booking an Empty Leg Flight?
Before booking an empty leg flight, there are a few important things to understand.
1. Routes Are Predetermined
Unlike a traditional private charter, where you can usually request a specific route, empty leg flights follow an aircraft’s existing repositioning schedule. You must select from the routes available.
2. Departure Times May Be Fixed
The departure time is generally based on the aircraft’s existing itinerary. Your preferred time may not be available, so flexibility is important.
3. Availability Can Change
Empty leg opportunities depend on other bookings and aircraft movements. A flight that is available today may not remain available if the original itinerary changes.
4. Confirm the Details Before Booking
Always confirm the final price, departure airport, destination, departure time, baggage arrangements, passenger requirements and applicable booking conditions before making payment.
Understanding these details helps you decide whether an empty leg flight is the right option for your journey.

Our goal is to make finding and booking a suitable private flight easier.
Rather than assuming you must always book a full-price charter, you can explore whether an empty leg flight fits your plans.
Is an Empty Leg Flight Right for You?
An empty leg flight may be a good option if:
- You’re flexible with your departure date or time.
- Your destination matches an available route.
- You want to explore ways to reduce private charter costs.
- You prefer the privacy and convenience of travelling on a private aircraft.
- You’re willing to plan around available flight opportunities.
If you need to depart at a very specific time or require a route that is not available as an empty leg, a standard private charter may be more suitable.
The best option depends on your itinerary, budget and travel priorities.
